A brief history of the necklace
Necklaces may have originated as much as 75,000 years ago, during the stone age. Intact necklaces have been discovered dating back to 30,000BC. These necklaces were made of shells, animal bones, teeth or claws and stones. While these were hardly items of fine jewelry, the concept of the necklace remains the same today.
Gold necklaces were a much more recent accessory - emerging sometime around 2,500BC. Gemstone necklaces made of gold or other metals were widely worn by both wealthy men and women in ancient Egypt where precious stones were set into complex patterns.
Gemstone gold necklaces became plentiful in Greece after the conquests of Alexander the Great. Rome was a latecomer in terms of fine jewelry necklaces and it was only after 1st century AD that gold and gemstone necklaces became widely worn by the wealthy.
In early modern Europe extravagant necklaces of gems and diamonds were worn by the wealthy - sometimes more than one necklace at a time to display their wealth.
Today necklaces embrace the variety of their history. There are the fashion necklaces made of shells and natural materials used by our early ancestors and the extravagant gemstone and diamond fine jewelry creations of gold, silver and platinum.
